Lindsay Lohan Car Crash: A falling star and her cars

Posted July 15th, 2010 in Chatter by Matt

Lindsay Lohan has had roughly one car crash, arrest, or DUI for every car she’s owned. And as you’ll see below, the former child star has owned a lot of cars.

After a string of hits in the early naughties that included Freaky Friday, Mean Girls, and Herbie: Fully Loaded, Lindsay Lohan earned a reputation as a party girl. Her next string of hits was of the vehicular kind, with crashes in Studio City (August, 2004), West Hollywood (October, 2005), London (November, 2006), and Beverly Hills (May, 2007).  She’s also had several fender benders and has been accused of bumping into paparazzi with her car on multiple occasions.

Authorities finally got serious with the actress when cocaine was found in her Mercedes SL65 AMG convertible following the 2007 crash. Though she was placed on probation, reports of Lohan’s partying and bad behavior did not let up. On July 6th of this year, Judge Marsha Revel sentenced the actress to 90 days in prison and 90 days at an in-patient rehab facility for violating the terms of her probation.  She’s scheduled to begin her sentence on July 20th.

So what does a hard-partying celebrity like Lindsay Lohan drive? We combed through the interwebz and found eight models with confirmed LiLo sightings. And while we appreciate Miss Lohan’s taste in automobiles, we do not approve of her driving while under the influence of drugs and alcohol.  Stay safe out there, people!

Lindsay Lohan’s Cars: Mercedes SL65 AMG

Lohan crashed this $180,000 convertible into the back of a minivan in 2005. The actress claimed that she was looking over her shoulder to avoid paparazzi and didn’t see the van as it slowed to make an illegal U-turn. At the time, the SL65 AMG was the most expensive version of the SL-Class and featured a twin-turbo V12 engine with just over 600-horsepower. Lohan has since replaced the car with an SL550, which has a more reasonable $100k price tag and 382-horsepower engine.

Lindsay Lohan’s Cars: Rolls-Royce Phantom

For a time, Lindsay rented a Rolls-Royce Phantom.  At $380,000, it’s one of the most most expensive luxury cars in the world. And with a custom matte black paint job, you can rest assured that this Rolls was pricier still.

Lindsay Lohan’s Cars: Maserati Quattroporte

Lohan has been spotted all over LA in this rare Italian luxury sedan. She most famously left the car parked outside Samantha Ronson’s house after the police were called for a domestic disturbance. The authorities later towed the car for a parking violation and it was sold soon afterwords. Lindsay’s particular model was said to be a 2007 Quattroporte Sport GT, which stickered for $121,000 when new.

Lindsay Lohan’s Cars: Porsche 911

Okay, so this iconic German sports car actually belonged to gal-pal/ex, Samantha Ronson. Lindsay was nonetheless spotted in this 911 Targa a few times while shopping in Beverly Hills. The actress certainly has a thing for fast cars, doesn’t she?

Lindsay Lohan’s Cars: Cadillac Escalade

Lindsay Lohan’s Cars: Mercedes C350 sedan

The most reasonably priced car that Miss Lohan has been spotted in is this $37,000 Mercedes C350 luxury sedan. Despite the affordable (for a celebrity) price tag, this Benz can still scoot to 60 in less than six seconds. That kind of performance should come in handy if you’re late for a luncheon at the Ivy.

Lindsay Lohan’s Cars: Herbie the Love Bug

Who could forget Herbie? Lindsay drove this unlikely race car in Disney’s 2005 movie Herbie: Fully Loaded. The film features a Volkswagen Beetle with a mind of its own. Sadly, Herbie’s driving has proven better than Lindsay’s.

All-Star Cars: A peek inside Kobe Bryant’s garage

Posted June 8th, 2010 in Chatter by Matt

Game 2 of the NBA Finals was a disappointment for fans of the LA Lakers.  Fortunately for Kobe Bryant, his drive home should have been anything but.

While the 103-94 loss on the home court was less welcome than a flat tire, Kobe nonetheless got to drive home in his Ferrari F430, a $300,000 sports car that can jet from 0-60 in less than four seconds and put a smile on your face in half that time.  Yowzahs.

For a guy who can afford to drive any car on the planet, the F430 makes for an interesting choice.  It’s not the most expensive Ferrari out there – but it is more focused and visceral than its exotic siblings.

We think that the choice says a lot about Kobe… as do his other rides from Land Rover, Bentley, and Cadillac.

After all, what kind of celebrity would leave a bright pink baby seat buckled into his Range Rover in full view of the paparazzi when he goes out for a date with his wife?

We sneaked a peek into the Black Mamba’s garage as part of a fun story for Fox Sports, analyzing the basketball great’s personality through the lens of his cars.  Have a look at our full report on Kobe and let us know your thoughts on the man and his cars.

Finding a suitable ride for Shaun White, the Flying Tomato

Posted February 17th, 2010 in Chatter by Matt

What’s fast and airborne and red all over?  That would be pro-snowboarding Olympian, Shaun White.

In case you don’t shred or haven’t read, White has been snowboarding since age six and went pro at thirteen.  He won gold at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino and is back to take on the world at the 2010 games in Vancouver.

In real life, Shaun races around in a Lamborghini Murcielago LP 640.  While an Italian exotic sports car might be a great match for White’s competitive nature and outrageous red hair, it’s not ideal for charging up mountains to get to the lodge.  So that got us thinking: what’s the best vehicle to get Shaun White up to the slopes?

We pulled up the newest data for snowboarders on the Honk search tool and then sorted out the coupes, sedans, and convertibles.  Those body-styles may appeal to boarders who want adrenaline-pumping action down at sea level but they can’t hold enough gear for Shaun.

Next, we filtered out anything that cost less than $40,000.  Sure, that’s steep – but consider that Mr. White pulls in several million dollars a year in endorsements from Burton, Target, and Ubisoft.  The man can afford a nice ride.

The resulting list is where things start to get subjective.  There are dozens of great pickup trucks and SUVs left to choose from and the Honk team had trouble agreeing on just one.  The Audi Q7 and Cadillac Escalade ESV were both cited for luxury and interior space while the Porsche Cayenne stood out for crazy-fast performance.

In the end, though, we felt that Shaun should be roaring up to the lodge from behind the wheel of an Infiniti FX.  Why?  The FX is fast, agile, sure-footed in the snow, and has a unique style all its own.  It might not be able to pull a McTwist 1260 but it sure seems like a great match for Sean’s personality.

Think we face planted on this one?  Run your own search on Honk and let us know what you think the Flying Tomato should be driving.
